West Bay vs. West End: Which Should You Visit in Roatan?

Trying to decide between West Bay and West End for your day in Roatan? I love West Bay for its beautiful beach and West End for its laid-back atmosphere, little shops, and places to eat. In this guide, I share what makes each one different, how I help visitors choose, and why you might want to experience both.

West Bay or West End? If you’re planning a visit to Roatan, you’ve probably come across both names and wondered which one to choose. The names sound similar, but spending a day in each place feels different.

I’m Sher, a Roatan local and the founder of Visit Roatan HN. Personally, I think West Bay is the most beautiful beach on the island. But I also love the laid-back feel of West End, especially when I want to walk around and explore.

So when someone asks me which one I recommend, my answer depends on what they want to do that day. Let me explain.

West Bay Is Where I’d Go for a Beach Day

If you tell me, “Sher, I just want a beautiful beach where I can spend the day,” I would recommend West Bay.

What I love about it is the long stretch of sand. You can walk from one end to the other, look around, and choose where you’d like to settle in. There are different spots along the beach, so you don’t have to spend your whole visit in the first place you arrive.

For me, this is somewhere to bring your swimsuit, take your time, and let the beach be the main plan.

You can swim, go for a walk along the shore, have lunch, and spend the afternoon enjoying the view. If you want an activity in between, West Bay also has options such as snorkeling, jet skiing, and parasailing.

Just check availability and any participation requirements before making an activity part of your plans.

A Little Detail About West Bay Day Passes

One thing I always like to explain before someone visits West Bay is that many of the beachfront restaurants are part of resorts.

If you want to use a resort’s facilities, such as its pool, loungers, or other amenities, you may need to purchase a day pass. What’s included depends on the property, so it’s worth asking before you arrive.

Dining at a restaurant and using the resort’s facilities can have different rules. Don’t assume that buying lunch automatically includes a beach chair or pool access.

If your plan is to settle somewhere comfortably for several hours, ask about seating, shade, bathrooms, food, and drinks. That way, you can choose a place that suits the kind of beach day you have in mind.

West End Is Where I’d Go to Walk Around and Explore

West End feels more laid-back to me, with more of a local village vibe.

Instead of choosing one place and staying there all day, you can walk along the street and stop wherever catches your attention. There are restaurants, bars, small grocery stores, and gift shops to look around.

You could stop for something to eat, browse for a souvenir, and then keep walking. You can also visit The Roatan Chocolate Factory in West End if you’d like to add a chocolate stop to your day.

That’s what I enjoy about this area: you can spend your time exploring without every moment needing to be a scheduled activity.

If you like discovering little places along the way, I think you’ll enjoy West End.

And Yes, West End Has a Beautiful Beach Too

Choosing West End doesn’t mean missing out on beach time.

Half Moon Bay is smaller than West Bay, but it’s beautiful too. You can include some time by the water and still explore the village during the same visit.

For me, the difference is how I would spend the day. In West Bay, I would make the beach the focus. In West End, I would spend more time walking around, with the beach as part of the outing.

Both places can give you a lovely day. They just offer different ways to enjoy it.

So, Which One Would I Recommend for You?

If you want to spend most of your day swimming, relaxing, and enjoying a long stretch of beach, I would choose West Bay.

If you want to walk around, visit different restaurants or bars, browse shops, and enjoy some beach time along the way, I would choose West End.

West Bay would also be my starting point if you’re interested in activities like jet skiing or parasailing.

And if you’re traveling with someone who wants a beach day while you’d rather explore? You might not have to choose just one.

Can You Visit West End and West Bay in the Same Day?

Yes, you can plan a visit that includes both, as long as you leave enough time for transportation and enjoy each stop without rushing.

I would start in West End. Walk around, browse the shops, and make any stops you’re interested in. Then continue to West Bay, where you can settle in for the beach portion of your day.

That order makes sense to me because you get the exploring done first. Once you arrive at West Bay, you can slow down instead of keeping an eye on the clock for your next sightseeing stop.

If you’re visiting on a cruise, we’ll need to look at your arrival and all-aboard times before deciding how much to include. A shorter visit to both places may work for some schedules, while choosing one may be more comfortable for others.

My Honest Answer? Both Are Worth Visiting

I wouldn’t tell you that one is always better than the other.

West Bay is my personal choice for the beach itself. West End is where I would go for that easygoing feeling of walking around, finding somewhere to eat, and seeing what catches my attention.

Think about what you want from your day, and let that guide your choice.

And if you have enough time, I’d love for you to experience both and decide which one feels more like you.

Let’s Plan Your Visit

If you’re still deciding, send me a message. Tell me whether you’re arriving by cruise or staying on the island, how many people are coming, and what you’d most like to do.

We can talk through a beach day, an outing with more exploring, or a visit that combines West End and West Bay.
